Welcoming Families: Four Laws of Childcare in Churches

Churches often scare away exactly the people they’re trying to reach. These four laws of childcare in churches can help you effectively care for young ones and welcome their families into the life of your church. Continue reading »

Developing Diversity: Part 1 – Prioritizing

Sometimes, diversity just happens.  That’s wonderful!  But what if it doesn’t?  This series of blog posts is about how leaders can choose to move ahead in developing diversity when it doesn’t arrive of its own accord. I’ll be opening discussions on six different topics, all of which I’ve shoehorned into words that start with the … Continue reading »

Does your church or organization need more diversity?

A couple of months ago, one of my neighbors had a party.  Frequently when someone has a party in our neighborhood, all of the available street parking fills up, and this one was pretty typical – with one exception.  There was a certain sameness about the vehicles.  Here’s what the street looked like:   It … Continue reading »

Fear vs. faith – which will decide our future?

Fear blocks much of what God seeks to do in our churches and lives… When we choose fear, we miss out on God’s blessings. Continue reading »

Bible Detox for Preachers

One of my sabbatical goals was to read through the New Testament this summer – the church leadership called it “scriptural immersion.”  I was surprised by my resistance to doing it.  My significant burnout was one factor, but that wasn’t the whole story. When I started seminary, I read an article that talked about the danger … Continue reading »

The Church’s Mission from Romans 10

Romans 10:8-15 “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with … Continue reading »

Denny’s Big Breakfast Gamble and the Church

I saw the Super Bowl ad for a free grand slam breakfast at Denny’s on February 3rd.  And I was planning to take the family.  Only each Denny’s we visited had a line around the block.  Apparently, Denny’s served 2 million breakfasts that morning.  They estimate that they got $50 million worth of free (positive) publicity … Continue reading »

My Post-Christian Son

I’ve noticed a big difference between the assumptions my 6-year-old son makes and the ones I made at the same age. I used to assume that everyone went to some kind of church. Johnny is surprised to learn that someone goes to church. He realizes that he lives in a post-Christian world. I hadn’t realized … Continue reading »

The front or the back of the line?

Eleanor and I were headed for a rare cup of coffee without the kids and during the five-minute drive, we encountered two different people who were angry over someone getting into the lane of traffic ahead of them.  Eleanor and I actually let a couple of people in and then found a great parking place!  … Continue reading »

Worship space decisions revisited

In response to my earlier post about the difficulty of making space in a smaller church, Becky made this suggestion: Have you thought of starting a new (small) church? I love the idea of small churches being so appealing that they multiply like bunnies. It’s really a reasonable thing to think about too – a … Continue reading »
