My third anniversary as a pastor

Posted by on August 14, 2006

Friday (August 11) was my third anniversary pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church. This would have escaped my notice entirely except that my Palm organizer reminded me that I’m now eligible to be an intern supervisor for an intern from Fuller Theological Seminary. (They require three years of experience.)

Trinity at SunsetThree years isn’t a long time, but many pastorates seem to last less than that long – including my predecessor’s. I don’t know if churches have trouble selecting pastors who will be a good match or if they expect pastors to be better people than we turn out to be or if we (churches and pastors) just don’t have the skills to handle the inevitable conflicts that arise when ministry is really happening…. Or maybe it’s something else.

I’m just glad that Trinity and I are still together. They’ve been patient with me, and I’ve worked hard to be patient when they don’t do what I’d like them to do too. The truth is that it is God’s church. It has been since before I was born and still will be after I die. God’s the only one who has the right to be disappointed and he chooses to be encouraging. We used to hear this as the assurance of pardon every week: “Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ. And Christ died for us. Christ rose for us. Christ reigns in power for us. Christ prays for us.”

Happy anniversary Trinity!
